Does Cleansing Aura Continuously Drain Mana Dragon Age Origins

Tip for Wynne users that run out of mana too fast

Avatar image for kazona

Been playing the game for almost 80 hours now, and one of the hardest things to do was succesfully manage Wynne's mana addiction. I used to burn through 30 mana potions easily in the span of half a dungeon. Now, however, I'm several fights into a dungeon and she's only used one. The key difference? I don't let her use Cleansing Aura automatically anymore. In an emergency I'll activate it manually, and it's a great save-my-arse spell, but it eats away at your mana pool like a baby' that's been denied breast feeding for too long.

So if you think Wynne's mana depletes too fast, and you have Cleansing Aura, try removing it from her Tactics.

80 hours?  Have you beat it yet?  Because I'm only at 20 and it still seems like the game just started.

How would Cleansing Aura eat away mana? Isn't it just a sustain?

I've got a few more.  Remove rejuvenate from her list, it's not worth the mana points.  Have her only cast stonefist on enemies that are immobilized, so that she and morrigan can get shatter combos.  Have her activate vessel of the spirit when her mana gets below 10%, as that will partially refill her mana bar.  I also like to set vessel of the spirit for when she's being melee attacked, because it's got a stun on it as well.  If you've got another mage have them learn spellbloom and cast it on Wynne when her magic gets below 50%.  That magic path will also let you learn the spell stinging swarm, and stinging swarm combined with virulent walking bomb is one hell of a combination, even though it's not listed in the game.

 @Delta Ass:

Most sustains in the game add to the fatigue percentage.  Well, you already knew that but some sustains like Spell Might and Cleansing Aura seem to use more mana than just what's denoted by the fatigue penalty.  I've usually got Wynne with Haste and Stoneskin constantly activated and I'd agree that Cleansing Aura would probably best be used only after combat is over in order to heal party member's injuries without having to use an injury kit.

blood magic. use the blood sap to replenish her hps, then she can cast forever.

Cleansing Aura actually drains mana in combat, but I simply program her tactics to use Regeneration on the tank specifically if it's below 90% health and that seems to win most battles combined with Life Ward/Heal @ 50%.

For party wide heals I just control her directly to cast Group Heal, since there's no tactics concerning the average party health to execute an ability.

Huh, nice to know.

Does anyone know what sort of strength:dex ratio to get for Leliana as an archer? At first, I thought I could just pump dex up as high as possible, but apparently it seems you also need some strength to increase her bow's damage.

Can't you increase her cunning and grab the Lethality talent? Cunning would increase her Bard Song+Unlocking and with lethality determines damage done.

Heh, maybe. I'm kinda clueless about rogues.

Ah oke, well if I may make a suggestion then:

Grab Lethality, aim for a maximum of 20 strength for leather gear (if at all!) and then pump Dexterity and Cunning up. Dexterity should still be the highest stat though.

Since you already know that the tank is constantly taking dmg you assign Wynne to use "Group Heal" when a random party member is under X percentage health. That would be of course be a character which you know isn't supposed to take dmg.
So for instance if your archer takes a lot of dmg(which "it" shouldn't) and gets below 50% your Wynne is assigned to use "Group heal". This will heal your tank(since he is always taking dmg), it will heal your archer, and it will heal other characters if they have taken dmg(which is most likely since if your ranged character gets below 50% then there is some aggro problems).
Of course you can't maximize the "Group Healing" skill this way, but it's the only way I came up with. Don't know if you find it worth spending mana on, but you could try it out :P

@ArchScabby: Nope I haven't finished it yet. I'd say I'm about 3 quarters through the main story. But I am really taking my sweet time.

@Delta_Ass: I think the description for Cleansing Aura is a bit innacurate. Yes it is a sustain, but besides the upkeep cost it also costs mana for each heal it does. So the more healing your party needs, the more mana Cleansing Aura drains. That's why I only use it when I absolutely need it. Although absolutely needing it also means that my party members must be taking a lot of damage, so activating it drains mana like a mofo. So it's kind of a double edged sword :P

Another tip I'd like to throw out there: get a piece of equipment that has Rapid Aim. It'll make your life as an archer a lot easier.
